Damn their earnest, hopeful faces. I used to try to give or microloan 4% (of admittedly not a great deal) but have slipped horribly since turning freelance / becoming a politically apathetic, over-caffeinated worker bee. But 1% sounds like a doable pledge. Suggestions above are useful. Do you rate Kiva, or is there a more effective finance scheme?
Kiva is probably as good as any for microfinance, but I don't especially rate microfinance. I just go with Givewell's suggestions these days - they have a team of intimidatingly smart people working full-time on thinking about cost-effectiveness and impact and rating charities and giving opportunities in order to maximise social returns. And they publish reams of detail about all of their investigations online.
