There's an Oxfam briefing paper that made this point among others a couple of years ago. The part on the carbon footprint of various foods was also quite depressing - have been a grumpy vegetarian ever since :-(
Thanks Laura. I'd like to see something like Givewell.org for this kind of thing - maybe call it livewell.org ? i.e. totally transparent rigorous dispassionate independent analysis
