Poverty down 12% in Rwanda

Rwanda launches its new poverty numbers today. Poverty has fallen by almost 12 percentage points in just 5 years. That is pretty incredible. Speaking at the launch, Paul Collier said  "The combination of growth, reduction in poverty and more equity has been achieved no where else in Africa."

Here is a comparison with international experience of poverty reduction:

I imagine that some commentators may have something to say about the political implications of all this. Not me. Just congratulations to the approximately 1 half a million* Rwandans who have managed to increase their income and work themselves out of poverty. And to the National Institute of Statistics and the Ministry of Finance & Economic Planning of Rwanda for getting these numbers out so quickly after the end of fieldwork. (And... to the team from OPM and Sussex who gave them a hand).

For more, follow @RwandaGov , @MinFinanceRw , #rwanda2020 , and you can find the full launch presentations here.

* A note on translating the % decrease into a number of people - I've heard the 1 million people lifted out of poverty line from a couple of people and that was also my initial estimate. The difference between 57% and 45% of the current population is 1 million people. However the population grew substantially between 2005 and 2010, such that around half of those people "lifted out of poverty" weren't actually born in 2005, but would have been born into poverty, so you need to be a little careful about saying "lifted 1 million people out of poverty". Actually half a million were lifted out of poverty, and half a million, were not born into poverty, which they would have been if the poverty rate had not fallen.

  1. Rwanda is a dictatorship. How can you trust their figures ?

  2. Here we go.... I trust them because I know personally some people who I trust who have seen the raw data, but that probably doesn't do much for you....

    ReplyDelete
  3. So you trust figures coming from a dictator because you have friends who are his friends ?!?

  4. That people talk, critisize, sing or dance; Rwandans are moving forward . These people have been working so hard and have been achieving a lot where other nations are shrinking. God bless Rwanda and it's leaders and God bless Africa

  5. Are you or not of seeing Rwanda succeed? Well, you can say what you want, but there are in Kigali World Bank officials, DFID officials, IMF, Different embassies and organisations that follow the trend, last but not least UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF and WHO that participate in the compilation of these data, and in all sectors. Don't forget Transparency International that monitors corruption level and evaluate doing business situation.
Rwanda is amazingly progressing well, and Congratulations to Rwandans, and their leadership.  At least a successful story from Africa!

  6. While the world is struggling with the economic crisis, Rwanda remains focused and resilient with the aim of reaching 20-20 Vision. Keep up the good work Rwandans, you have the capacity to reach there.
Those ones who talk about dictatorship are deceiving, a dictatorship doesn't encourage Twitter, Facebook, Internet use for all,...
President Kagame is probably one of the best leaders modern Africa has ever had.
Congratulations Mr President, keep up the good work

  7. I can't seem to find how they are defining 'poverty' - international standard or their own definition?

  8. I would guess against a Rwandan poverty line - they had some Sussex economists work on the estimation.

  11. Real successes from Africa are numerous but you despise them. They are all those people confronting dictators without the means of the numerous international bureaucracies you enumerate: Kigali World Bank officials, DFID officials, IMF (sent by Dominique Strauss Kahn? LOL) and the like.

  12. You like to congratulate a dictator. It's your choice
